Open XML for Developers & Solutions Architects

Overview

By default, documents created using 2007 Microsoft Office products will be based on new, XML-based file formats. Distinct from the binary-based file format that has been a mainstay of past Microsoft Office releases, the new Office XML Formats are compact, robust file formats that enable better data integration between documents and back-end systems. An open, royalty-free file format specification maximizes interoperability in a heterogeneous environment, and enables any technology provider to integrate Microsoft Office documents into their solutions.

Open XML for Managers

Overview

Office Open XML (OpenXML) is a proposed open standard for word-processing documents, presentations, and spreadsheets that can be freely implemented by multiple applications on multiple platforms. Its publication benefits organisations that intend to implement applications capable of using the format, commercial and governmental entities that procure such software and educators or authors who teach the format. Ultimately, all users enjoy the benefits of an XML standard for their documents, including stability, preservation, interoperability and ongoing evolution.

With the launch of Office 2007 more and more organisation who leverage the Office product within their application are working closely with the Open XML standard.
